MOONBEAM is a handsome 42’ Covey Island-built Motorcruiser, well-known as the “Summer Kyle” design which sports an ultra shallow draft and tunnel-drive. Designed by Dave Gerr, and built in 2001, MOONBEAM is built of composite construction, strip planking and epoxy, with multiple layers of fiberglass for an ultra strong and durable hull.  In addition, a thick, steel-plated bottom adds ballast down low for a balanced ride and provides the ability to beach the vessel if desired. MOONBEAM’S present owners are her third. The vessel has successfully been cruised from the Caribbean to the Canadian Maritimes. She has proven to be an ideal inland waterway or Great Loop vessel due to her low profile, folding mast and 22” shallow draft. She also has performed well offshore in heavy weather owning to her sharp entry, low center of gravity, and steadying sail. The nature of the tunnel drive design causes the boat to track very well at an economical 9 knot cruising speed (est 4 GPH), while the large rudder and bow thruster permit precise maneuvering in tight quarters. She can turn in her own length. Her Yanmar 170 hp diesel is quiet, efficient and reliable. MOONBEAM is the second vessel of this Gerr design to be built by Covey Island Boatworks. She is the newer and more customized of the two sisterships, BELLE MARIE and MOONBEAM.  Both have both been featured in Wooden Boat & Passagemaker articles.

  • Large 22 x 24 fiberglass rudder and bow thruster permit precise maneuvering.
  • 22” shallow draft opens access to remote and otherwise inaccessible cruising grounds.
  • Extensive ventilation.  Most every aluminum-framed window in the wheelhouse and aft salon opens; all windshield panes open; large Lexan hatches in wheelhouse and aft cabin open on tracks;  two large Lexan hatches in owner’s cabin and galley open upward and forward with swing-down wood framed screens; remaining two hatches in owners cabin open upward and forward.  Port and starboard sliding doors in wheelhouse provide for additional ventilation and quick access to the deck.  All opening side windows and the six opening portholes are screened.  The steadying sail can be used to keep the vessel into the wind so that air can flow from the bow facing screened forward hatches through the entire boat and out the screened aft cabin windows.  No need for air conditioning, even in tropical waters.  And bugs are excluded.
  • Three 8D house gel batteries and one 4D starting gel battery provide enough power to run refrigeration, lights, small appliances, water pump, electric head and a microwave oven.  Normally recharging is accomplished while underway or at a slow idle if necessary.  No need for a noise, exhaust and maintenance of a generator.

The current owner is a very experienced sailor and cruising yachtsman who has owned several serious boats in his 53 years as a boat owner.  An engineer/entrepreneur, he bought MOONBEAM (built originally as Twombley) because of her fundamentally excellent design and seaworthiness but also because it was cold-molded wood/epoxy/fiberglass construction and could easily be customized further.  The current configuration represents a highly creative evolution of a great design.  It is safe, comfortable, flexible, economical, beautiful and not likely to go out of style – ever.
