CUSTOM UPGRADES DONE IN EXTENSIVE 5 YEAR REFIT: (Comments by Seller)

·       Complete refit done by owner in 2007-2012. Owner stripped vessel down to hull and basically rebuilt the vessel, with everything on board either brand new or fully rebuilt better than new. Then she was sailed for 2 1/2 months in 2012 and has not been used since.

·       Three individual all aluminum fuel tanks replace the original 100 gallon iron tank and takes up the exact same spaces with the same capacity. Each is removable, coated with a black corrosion proof paint and fully separate from the other two tanks. This allows fuel to be isolated if dirty and needs to be cleaned.

·       Dual Racor fuel system that allows for switching between tanks; pump from one tank to another while filtering that tanks fuel. The system also is set up to allow "on the go" immediate switching from one filter to the other without shutting off the engine. At the same time one filter is in operation the other filter can be switched out independently.

·       Three large 200 amp VICTRON AGM DC storage batteries are located in a specially built box that is on the centerline of the boat to keep weight distribution evenly distributed. These batteries are kept charged by a special 210 amp alternator on the Beta 43 motor, it was factory installed in the UK. A second 55 amp alternator on the motor keeps the 12 volt starter battery charged. The entire Electrical System was designed and drawn up by the Master Electrician who teaches at the Annapolis School of Seamanship.

·       All lights are LED with the exception of 4 halogen cabin overhead lights in the same original locations as the original lights.

·       All lines come back to the cockpit by way of custom fabricated turning blocks at the bottom of the mast, leading through two, four gang Spinlock Rope Clutches, terminating with two self-tailing Lewmar 38 winches, one on either side of the companion way.

·       Two custom designed and fabricated Grab Rails were attached to both sides of the companion way to facilitate safe movement from the cockpit to the cabin. There are also bronze tether connections in the cockpit for safety in a rough sea, as well as Jacklines in-place to safely maneuver over the boat deck.

·       The primary 55lb. Spade Anchor is oversized with 300' of 5/16" galvanized chain that is easily pulled up by an oversized Lewmar H3 Windlass. "From the cockpit" controls for raising and lowering the anchor to specific depths and a counter to know how much chain is out. The Windlass can also be controlled by foot switches on the foredeck. The chain then is dropped by way of a custom designed Stainless Steel Tube to a Stainless Steel covered hold just ahead of the holding tank, below the waterline for correct weight distribution. A second Bow Anchor, a CQR 35 lb is located beside the primary anchor with both chain and nylon rode. There is also a Stern Anchor, mounted on an Anchor Roller with a locker directly below the deck to store the chain and rode.

·       Two large self-tailing new Lewmar 50 Winches are mounted on the original Stainless Steel Supports one on either side of the cockpit to control the head sail. Each rail has mounted an Adjustable Car System for controlling and maintaining the correct angle of the head sails, both controlled from the cockpit.

·       A new oversized Traveler was attached over the turtle above the companion way to replace the antiquated stern mounted Traveler. The Traveler controls the boom with three S/S stirrups in the center of the boom. The center of the boom was reinforced to carry the load with two thick pieced of Aluminum on either (inside) part of the boom to prevent breakage of the boom under load.

·       A brand new from the crate Beta 43hp diesel engine was installed to replace the aged Volvo 38 hp. The new engine transmission and dripless seal and drive train have less than 30 hrs. of use. The engine and transmission weights less, is smaller, and has much more power than the Volvo 38, as well as getting better fuel efficiency.

·       A two stage Bilge Pump System was introduced to provide an extra measure of safety along with a High Water Bilge Alarm and Counter locate at the Nav Station. There is also a large Bronze Manual Bilge Pump that was fully rebuilt with new gaskets an is in perfect working order. The VETUS Muffler and Anti-Siphon Exhaust systems is set up so as to not siphon water back into the engine by following waves.

·       The controls and gauges were removed from the well of the cockpit and placed in a Teak Cover box, offset to the port side of the cockpit. The engine controls are located there, as well as the Auto Pilot, all gauges and lights. Another custom feature is that all outside lights are controlled from the cockpit in this box and not from the nav station below decks. A most unique and conveniently located feature. The  Blue LED side deck lights are also controlled here.

·       The cabin is protected in heavy weather by specially designed Storm Board with a window to view the cockpit area when in use. There is also an interior lock installed for protection from intruders.

·       The Cabin is off White with solid Varnished Teak Panels with Teak and Holly Sole. All new White Naugahyde Salon Settees and Berth Cushions. New Cockpit Cushions were custom made at the same time. The Galley features a FORCE 10 three burner stove with oven and a new Top Loading SEA FROST Refrigerator / Freezer. There is a 6 gallon Electric Hot Water Heater and a Kenmore Microwave Oven. The Galley features a Deep Stainless Steel Double Sink and new high arching faucet with pressure Hot and Cold water, the original fully functioning Hand Pump for cold water, and the sink and counters are all custom installed Corian with Teak Fiddles for off shore sailing. The Head is also upgraded with a new deep Sink, new faucet/hand shower and Corian counter and matching Corian toilet base, the original Hand Pumps for both the Galley and Head were re-chromed and rebuilt with new gaskets. A new JABSCO toilet was installed in the head with a Macerator Pump. A Shower, hand held, is in the toilet compartment.

·       When the new AC and new DC panel were installed all new Tinned Marine Wire was installed throughout the boat. A new 18,000 BTU ESPAR D-5 Diesel Cabin Heater, and new a Mangum Energy 2000 pure sign inverter along with a Magnum Energy Battery Monitoring system were also installed. A 32" Flat Screen TV was set in the salon and is set up to be used in conjunction with computers and the chart plotter as a monitor.

·       A new ICOM M802 SSB with a GAM/McKim backstay antenna and grounding system along with a new Standard Horizon GX2200 Matrix VHF Radio with AIS and GPS, is installed in the Nav Station. The VHF has a PA SPEAKER, an ELECTRIC HORN and FOG HORN are mounted on the mast directly below the RADAR.

·       Full set of new RAYMARINE SYSTEM - GPS/CHARTPLOTTER/RADAR, FATHOMETER, KNOTMETER AND WIND.

·       Other Electronic Navigation items include a PLASTIMO Compass, CETEC BENMAR Autopilot, Clock, Barometer, and FLEMING Self-Steering

·       A custom designed Aluminum with Teak Top, double 20 lb. propane tank storage box is mounted on the fore deck for safety and convenience that also doubles as a nice seat.

·       When Moonshine was first examined it was determined that the deck core had been compromised by water leaking into it through the screw holes holding the teak decking in place. All of the teak decking had to be removed from the entire deck and cabin top in order to replace the rotten water soaked core. A circular saw was used to remove the decking in marked pieces to be prepped and stored for their re-installation.

·       All of the core material was removed, the area sanded and cleaned then new kiln dried End Grain Hemlock was used to re-core the deck and cabin top. Each piece of the new coring was epoxied in place by hand, then covered with more epoxy to fill in any voids. Once this was completed the previously removed, cleaned, top pieces were epoxied back in place and screwed back down for a good, original fit. After the deck has fully set up all screw were removed and the holes filled with epoxy.

·       The decks and cabin top were finished with a non-skid material called Kiwi-Grip which is extremely durable and was able to be color matched to the paint for a professional finish. All of the deck attachment items have stainless steel backing plates and are through bolted.

·       On each side of the companion way new platforms were molded and epoxied in place so as to hold the rope clutches and winches level, not as they were previously conforming to the slope of the cabin top. This made them much easier to work with. Rope clutches and winches were all through bolted with backing plates. This is the manner in which all items that attached to the deck or cabin top were attached.

·       The hull was stripped down to bare fiberglass then sealed using epoxy. The areas where the bilge is located within the hull was covered with sheets of Kevlar material so as to be able to withstand any damage to these walls from being hit by a rock, coral, or a log etc. Yet one more layer of safety.

·       All scuppers were redesigned and upgraded from the original design, that being located half in the fiberglass deck and half in the teak bulwarks thus causing leaks. This was remedied by epoxying in fabricated fiberglass tubes to fit in the previous locations, thus eliminated any chance for leakage. All Lifeline Bases were removed from their original locations attached to the deck as they also were a source of leakage. New bases were fabricated based upon an upgraded version that appeared on newer UP 36's. These being through bolted to the bulwarks. All life lines are new uncovered cable, these are in compliance with many offshore rules governing rallies and races.

·       MOONSHINE, and for that matter all UP36's features a traditional Canoe Stern, made famous by their heavy weather Colin-Archer predecessors. They are known for their handling ability with large following seas. Above the stern was a teak Pushpit that normally ends up with all types of "stuff" stored on it. This was removed and in its place, a custom designed and fabricated on the boat, a fully enclosing Stainless Steel Double Stern Rail with teak seats on either side. This gives her a much larger Fully Enclosed cockpit area, being rigid provides for much greater safety at sea, and at the same time offers a more contemporary feel and look to the sailboat. A sturdy custom designed folding stainless steel ladder is attached to this rail that can be opened from the water.

·       A System designed to divert a Lightning Strike directly from an aluminum lightning rod is attached to the top of the mast and is carried by a heavy copper cable to a 1/4" x 1" x 48" piece of copper hull mounted below the waterline, to ground any potential strike. A door was built into the aft bulkhead to allow access to the stern compartment for maintenance and repairs.

·       The original Stainless Steel 140 gallon water tank is in excellent condition. A whole new water system with pumps, pressure tank, hoses, and fittings were installed throughout.

·       The original Nav Station was enlarged upon by removing a large top drawer that the table sat atop of. This opened up the space making a very efficient and comfortable are to work in.

·       Both the Nav Station table and the Salon table have been prepped for a new top to be added and will be sold in this condition to allow the future owner to personalize Moonshine to their own taste as these are both very showy surfaces that can reflect the owners taste. 

·       In the documentation above a very important customization to Moonshine was skipped over. The original 100 gallon Iron fuel tank was removed in parts as it and the water tank were built in at the factory so was a major project to remove. The sole of the galley had to be removed then the tank was cut into 5 pieces to facilitate its removal through the companion way. Once removed it was spot welded back together and measured for size. From these measurements, three new tanks of varying sizes were designed to replace exactly the original tank. These 3 tanks were fabricated out of Aluminum, painted with two coats of a black anti-corrosion paint. They were sized starting from the aft end closest to the motor 19 gallons. This tank was designed to hold just enough for local cruising so that at the end of the season it was very easy to top off to prevent condensation and water. The other two were 38, and 43 gallons respectively; reserved for off shore passage making. What makes these three tanks entirely unique and the perfect design for world travel is the way they were set up. Each tank is entirely independent from the other two with their own separate fill valve at the head of each tank. Each tank has a fuel line drawing from the tank, each tank also has a return. A 3 way valve controls the fuel to the engine from which ever tank you choose, and a second 3 way valve returns fuel to the tank you choose. This system is used for cleaning the fuel or to transfer from one tank to another. Each tank has a breather vent line that is joined with the other two tanks and led up to a safe level to protect from water. Each tank has its own 1" x 3" diameter sump built into the bottom of each tank with a line from the bottom of the sump capped off at the top. Simply remove the cap and attach a hand pump to the fitting and easily remove any water or debris from the tank keeping each tank and its fuel clean. This fitting could also be used to hook a pump up to in order to empty the tank completely if ever desired. Below are a few pictures of this system.
