COMMENTS: In the fall of 2020 a 1977 43’ Chummy Rich Downeast cruiser called HUNNY (ex SEA STAR) was brought into the shop for a rebuild. The boat was purchased with a low hour/ well maintained 370 HP Yanmar engine after a thorough survey by Tom Adams of Maine Design Company. Before long we had her stripped down to a bare hull and Doug was enlisted for designing all new superstructure and accommodations, while Ellery and Don Eley set about planning a cutting edge electrical system and Matt and Kit began making structural repairs and improvements to the hull.

Due to unforeseen circumstances HUNNY is now for sale with approximately 3/4 of her refit accomplished .  This is a unique opportunity to purchase a classic liveaboard cruiser in the late stages of a complete systems, superstructure and accommodations rebuild.  Every system aside from the main engine is brand new and state of the art, (see list below).  At this asking price HUNNY is a rare value approaching $0.50 on the dollar.  At this stage of  the project much of the work is completed, but an experienced and knowledgeable owner would still have the opportunity to customize some of the layout and style of the interior without setting the project back.

HUNNY’S current owner hails from Mississippi and it was important for him to incorporate some southern charm into a boat that is otherwise all “Downeast.” He personally sourced hundreds of board feet of “sinker cypress” for interior joinery, trim and paneling from Albany Woodworks in Tickfaw Louisiana. “Sinker” cypress is old growth cypress that has been recovered from the bottoms of bayous, lakes and rivers in the south where it has been lying preserved for 100+ years. Not surprisingly it’s time in the bayou tells it’s tale in the color of the wood which varies from a rich “rainbow” brown reminiscent of fresh-sawn Teak, to an iridescent golden amber. We’ve enjoying getting to know this fascinating lumber.

Tastefully shrouded in this ancient lumber will be a cutting edge electrical system providing her owner every comfort of home without ever plugging in at a marina. A 990 amp Victron Lithium-Ion battery bank from PKYS will silently power two heat pumps (for climate control), an induction cook top, electric “multi oven” freezer, fridge, hot water, onboard Wifi, flat screen TV and much more. When the sun shines a 1500W Solbian SR+ solar array will keep the battery bank topped up without any noise. If HUNNY is underway a 215 amp Balmar Li alternator will keep her charged, and there's always the brand new Northern lights 6kw genset at the ready.  The engine room is thoroughly sound insulated with the latest materials from Soundown Corp. With flexible mounts, flexible coupling and Soundown water drop muffler on the main engine and isolation mounts and a sound enclosure on the genset, the pilot house and cabin will be remarkably quiet no matter what's running.

Her ample pilot house will make for a bright and comfortable salon with a generous galley to port.  To starboard aft of the helm is the dinette featuring a retractable table pedestal for conversion from dining table to cocktail table and all the way retracted for conversion to a double berth.  Down below the masters berth is a double to starboard with office and dressing space to port.  Moving forward there is a stand alone shower to port, opposite the head to starboard.  In the foc'sle are two single berths, a reading chair, and a hanging locker.

The goal of HUNNY'S rebuild was to create an extraordinarily comfortable liveaboard cruiser with every comfort of home shrouded in custom joinery and classic details.  Her cutting edge electrical system incorporating the latest lithium-ion and solar technology sets her apart, and will set you apart from crowded marinas full of boats tethered to shore power.  When finished, HUNNY will be a wonderfully unique venue in which to experience the best and most remote secrets of the coast, quietly, responsibly and in complete comfort.
